It’s that time of year again, when we get the list of village buildings and accessories that Department 56 is retiring this year. The molds are broken and no more pieces of that design will be made. This keeps the product line fresh and new ideas flowing as designers create new editions of this great village brand.
Most of the collectibles companies make way too many of their pieces, so prices are generally pretty reasonable on the secondary market. It’s heartbreaking if you’re a collector who buys pieces in gift stores, but it’s great if you want to get the cheapest prices for your favorites. If shipping prices are reasonable, you can find some . It’s also a good indicator of fair prices too, in case you want to have some leverage when negotiating with a local seller!
So here we go!

I have to agree, it can be really frustrating when you have your heart set on a certain building or figurine and come to find out that it has been retired. Ebay on the other hand has been a fantastic resource to acquire these retired treasures.

I have a friend that owns a home decor and gift shop. They have a lot of dept 56 items. Recently he was telling me that when they retire he has to lower his prices to compete with the market and that they used sky rocket… is this not the case where you are? Because it really frustrates him. Just curious.
Have a happy new year!

Brian – just about all D56 retailers face price drops when the pieces are retired. It used to be that prices would go up, because pieces were in shorter supply and would not be enough to meet demand. However, sales have dropped for collectibles – and just about everything else! – and the huge number of pieces made each year means that there is actually an oversupply of village pieces. That drops prices like a rock. Most smart shoppers buy their pieces on the secondary market (eBay, or through direct purchase from other collectors) because they can get them for much cheaper.
