Twice a year Department 56 releases lists of retired pieces that will no longer be available in retail stores. In the old days, this used to trigger a buying frenzy, with people lining up at the doors at midnight to grab “the last” retired piece for their village collection.
Today, the vast supply of product on the market, especially places like eBay, mean that you don’t have to do this any more. There’s plenty of retired pieces still in inventories and will be for some time to come. Plus the inevitable downsizing or collection-thinning process means that you’ll be able to get that retired piece at a steep discount to retail value!
